Why the Ocoee depends on dam releases

Most of the Ocoee’s flow is normally diverted through a wooden flume line to a hydroelectric powerhouse. On scheduled days, TVA stops the diversion and sends the water down the natural riverbed instead — creating the continuous Class III–IV rapids the Ocoee is famous for.

There are two whitewater sections, and they run on different schedules:

Middle Ocoee — the most popular, beginner-friendly stretch (about 5 miles). It has the most release days.
Upper Ocoee — the steeper, more technical section that hosted the 1996 Olympic whitewater events. It runs on fewer, specific days.

When is the Ocoee rafting season?

The release season generally runs from late spring through early fall — roughly mid-March/April into early November, depending on the year and section. In peak summer, the Middle Ocoee typically has releases most days of the week, while the Upper Ocoee runs on a more limited weekend-focused schedule.

How to plan your trip around the schedule

A few simple rules make planning easy:

Pick your section first. Want the classic, approachable run? Aim for the Middle Ocoee. Want the Olympic course? Check Upper Ocoee release days, which are more limited.
Weekends have the most options — both sections usually run, which is why they book up fastest.
Book ahead in summer. July and August are the busiest weeks of the season.
